Nobody wants to move during the cold winter months, but if your lease has expired or other circumstances make it unavoidable, there’s not much you can do. What you can do is prepare for the move to ensure it goes as smoothly as possible. From keeping warm to protecting your belongings, we’ve got you covered with tips to help you survive your winter move!

Protecting Your Belongings

During a move, your first priority is the safety of your belongings. The cold weather makes many items more susceptible to breaking, including glassware and electronics. You should double wrap these items with blankets and other protective materials to help regulate their temperature.  If possible, place the boxes containing your most fragile items in your car or the cab of the moving vehicle to further ensure their safety. When you get to your new space be sure to unpack those items first to further minimize the time they spend in the harsh temperatures. Roy’s Moving provides its clients professional packing services for additional cost. We also provide specialty items moving services for antiques and sensitive musical instruments.

Keep Warm

Whether you decide to face the cold and move your self, or you opt for a professional moving crew, staying warm during the move is vital. Have hot coffee or tea on hand to warm up during the move. A cold move may require a few extra breaks to warm up, which can make the process take longer. Even professional movers aren’t immune to the cold so try to make their job as easy as possible. Plow your driveway and sidewalks, put salt down, and be sure the inside of your space is warm when they arrive.

Prepare for Last Minute Changes

Winter brings unexpected weather changes very quickly, so be prepared to make some last-minute changes to your plan. The drive from one location to another will likely take longer than expected and that’s okay! It’s better to arrive late than to get into an accident and not arrive at all. If you’ll be driving your car to the new location, it’s a good idea to get a tune-up and service check before moving day.

The last thing you need in the middle of a move is a car that won’t start or breaks down because of the cold temperatures! A winter move comes with many challenges and dangers that moves during other seasons don’t have to face, but with the right preparation and mindset you can ensure you and your team of help
are all kept safe and warm.
